When Maria first entered the doors of the Stamford Senior Center, she was quiet, reserved and conscientious because she had to use crutches to ambulate. Maria lost her leg in a drive by shooting in her native country of Columbia. She fled her country with her son and came to Stamford, but felt isolated sitting at home alone all day, while her son worked to provide for them. That changed when she found the Stamford Senior Center, where she was welcomed with warmth, found people speaking her language who shared her cultural traditions. She immediately felt a sense of belonging. Maria comes to the Center daily and her days are filled with laughter, purpose and friendship. She enjoys taking fitness classes, ESL and attending cultural celebrations. "This place is my home, I feel seen and valued here. People see me for who I am and not my limitations." Maria's story is just one of many. Every day older adults from all backgrounds come through our doors looking for connection, joy and friendship. Whether it's a nutritious, affordable meal, fitness classess, language classes or cultural celebrations, the SSC is a place where aging is celebrated and every person matters.
